Working with Heather
Trauma Informed, Healing Centered
Heather is not only a studied expert in the field of trauma, but she is also a human with lived experience. Healing is not just a hypothetical theory from a book for Heather; it's personal. She says, "Knowing trauma and healing from the inside out allows you to hold hope for others fumbling through the darkness. Resiliency and growth are everyone's birthright; sometimes, we need someone to remind us who we are and point us in the right direction."
Heather brings humanity and compassion to her training services, which can only be delivered by someone intimately knowing the science and experience of hardship. An advocate for social justice and health equity, Heather stands firm in the proclamation that trauma-informed care without cultural humility is at best performative and at worst harmful. The culture and structures of the United States have been built on systems of oppression and injustice; we are all bathed in unconscious bias that affects the care we deliver if the work to explore ourselves is not done.
Health care disparities are fueled by medical racism and prejudice in medical education. Thus, Heather adopts and incorporates anti-racist and decolonial paradigms to confront the harm and injustice that have traumatized many patients. Trauma-informed care can only be effective when it is completed by decolonial anti-racism. Confronting the past is not always comfortable. Yet, Heather is skillful at weaving together neuroscience, biology, shared human experiences, and humor to create an environment where participants leave challenged, thoughtful, and buoyed.
"Trauma need not be a dirty word or a heavy discussion. What doesn't kill us gives us a wicked sense of humor. No one gets off this planet alive, so we may as well talk about navigating the icky stuff so we can get back to having some fun." ~ Heather Rist

Community Wellness Webinars
People are always commenting that it seems like younger generations are learning a lot more about emotional health and mental wellness than their parents or grandparents. And, they’re right! Humanity has not had the opportunity to really address emotional needs until the latter half of the 20th century. And, unfortunately, many of these concepts, tools, and skills are still not taught in high school health classes. So, we’ve got a lot of catching up to do!

Trauma and toxic stress exposure impact brain development, learning, memory, lifetime health, and disease development. Trauma-informed pedagogy improves learning and student retention while providing educators skills and a framework to meet challenging student needs. Trauma-informed healthcare addresses root causes of disease and improves health rather than just managing symptoms. Trauma-informed providers build better rapport, establish patient trust, enhance equity, have better outcomes. Trauma-informed systems and organizations have higher staff retention, lower rates of burnout, and increased job satisfaction.
